Tronsmo – One of those kind of bookstores you want to live in 24/7

Last time I spent a few days in Oslo, Norway, a friend of mine who lives in the city, showed me this absolutely amazing little alternative bookstore named Tronsmo; it’s one of those shops that you can’t believe your lucky star that you found out about.

I personally feel it is important to support those kind of bookstores. The owners and staff put so much effort into handpicking those hard to find titles which you otherwise wouldn’t even know existed.

Tronsmo carries fiction litteratur from East Asia, India, Africa, Latin America and Middle East. They have a fantastic assortment of books that discusses film, music, design, photography and art, and non-fiction social commentary litterature that critisize, debates and bring up dialogue about such topics as globalism and politics.
There is also a small but very nice assortment of travel litterature titles ( I bought a handful of titles from the Wallpapers City Guide books, a book series which I absolutely love.)
And last but not least, their comic book and graphic novel assortment are very impressive.

Tronsmo is located on Kristian Augustsgate 19 (5 min walking distance from Karl Johans Gata)

Check out their official website: where you also can purchase books.

Best Social Art Project Ever? One Million Giraffes

This is one of the things I love most about Internet; it brings people from all kinds of paths in life to join in on some of the most random projects ever. “One Million giraffes” is one of those.

Two friends; Ola and Jörgen, make a silly bet with each other. Ola claims that he can collect one million pictures of giraffes. Jörgen bet he can’t.

Ola starts a website where people can upload pics that they have drawn or made of giraffes.

440 days later and with the help from, well a lot of people, Ola wins the bet.

This was one year ago but you can still upload your giraffe picture. It’s a perfect thing to do on a rainy day.

Be sure to check it out: .
It’s still alive and kicking and now also has a theme song, which somebody made. And then somebody else made a cover of it! I love how each and every giraff pictures is properly credited to the person who sent it in.

This fun and heartwarming social art project has now resulted in a book “One Million Giraffes” which in 32 pages squeeze in almost all of the giraffes in a mosaic style pattern.

Strike Gold with Sterling

I was just now browsing my favourite bookstore online and stumbled upon this little gem, or what I believe to be a gem, because it hasn’t been released yet. As the die-hard Mad Men lover it just screamed “Buy Me” to me, so I will plug it before even opening the cover. And anyone else who follows Mad Men will probably feel the same urge to purchase. The rest won’t understand why anyone would need the advice from a advertising executive, of all people, and who, to top of it all off, also happens to been in his prime in the 1960s!

The official description reads, complete with some great quotes from Sterling:

Advertising pioneer and visionary Roger Sterling, Jr., served with distinction in the Navy during World War II, and joined Sterling Cooper Advertising as a junior account executive in 1947. He worked his way up to managing partner before leaving to found his own agency, Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, in 1963.

During his long and illustrious career, Sterling has come into contact with all the luminaries and would-be luminaries of the advertising world, and he has acquired quite a reputation among his colleagues for his quips, barbs, and witticisms.

Taken as a whole, Roger Sterling’s pithy comments and observations amount to a unique window on the advertising world—a world that few among us are privileged to witness first—hand—as well as a commentary on life in New York City in the middle of the twentieth century.

A few “sterling” examples:

“When a man gets to a point in his life when his name’s on the building,
he can get an unnatural sense of entitlement.”

“The day you sign a client is the day you start losing him.”

“Being with a client is like being in a marriage. Sometimes you get into it for the wrong reasons, and eventually they hit you in the face.”

“When God closes a door, he opens a dress.”

Sterling’s Gold covers it all: business, marriage, and the taste of success made sweeter with a glass of something strong.

Sterling’s Gold is published by Grove press and will be released November 16.

Book review: We Are One

This is a book I hope everyone will buy. It’s about a topic that I take great interest in; tribal people. The 225 page book is called We are One and is edited by Jo Eede and portrays the wisdom, situation and cultures of tribal peoples throughout the world; from Yanomani indians in South America to Aboriginees in Australia.

Several celebrities, the likes of Richard Gere and Colin Firth, have also contributed with essays or quotes. The book are filled with stunning photographs and are worth buying for that alone. But the best reason for buying it; all profits go to tribal people.

We are One is made and published by Survival International, a unique organisation that has worked for over 40 years to help the situation for the world’s tribal peoples, and to make the rest of the world open their eyes to the problems that tribal people face. Unfortunately the mainstream media hardly ever write a line about tribal people’s situation and the crime that is made against them. that is why Survival International is such an important organization.
